Apart from the waterfalls as the main attraction in Phnom Kulen National Park, we can also visit Preah Ang Thom, a Buddhist complex with the famous giant Reclining Buddha statue that was established in the 16th century. The giant statue of Reclining Buddha which is located at 8meters height on a mountain rock, is the biggest Buddha statue in Cambodia, about 17 meters in length.
I was stunned when I saw this Reclining Buddha’s statue. For the first time, I saw a Buddha Reclining statue with the head on the right side, very old and giant! Although the Buddha’s position indicates Parinirvana (the journey to nirvana after the death), I see the position of his right foot pointing to the earth, not resting above his left leg. This is unusual Reclining Buddha’s Statue.
The common Parinirvana Reclining Buddha’s statue that usually can be seen in Thailand, Penang, Myanmar, Japan or Korea or other Buddhist countries, has the head on the left side. The Buddha’s head on the left side and is lying on his right side of the body with his leg resting and not pointing to the earth, as well as his hands.
After going back to Siem Reap that night, I was googling about it and found out there’s only 3 places on Earth with the Reclining Buddha’s statue like above: two in Thailand and one in Phnom Kulen. It’s really unusual.
